Proving Your Entitlement To Drive

The driving licence now comprises the photocard only.

Any endorsements, penalty points or driving bans are now only accessible online. Therefore, your driving instructor must check your provisional licence to see the vehicles it entitles you to drive and the information regarding penalty points and disqualifications.

You will need the following to do this :

  • The whole driver number from your driving licence (number 5 on your driving licence)
  • Your national insurance number
  • The postcode on your driving licence

Then go to this website

https://www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence

Step one:

Enter your driving licence number, national insurance number and the postcode as shown on your driving licence.

Step two:

Click on “share licence information”. You will see a six-digit case-sensitive code. This case-sensitive code will only be valid for 21 days.

Step three:

Send a text or WhatsApp message to your driving instructor, giving the case-sensitive six-digit code and the last eight characters of your driving licence number.

Before your first driving lesson, your Instructor will view your licence details online and confirm the checks’ results.

Bring your provisional photocard licence on your first driving lesson for identification.

Please do so to ensure the driving lesson can continue.

At the start of your first driving lesson, it will request that you perform an eyesight test. If you wear glasses, bring them with you. If you use contact lenses, you must have them in. You must pass the eyesight test for the driving lesson to continue.

You must wear your glasses or contact lenses every time you drive if you need them to meet the vision standards for driving a vehicle.

If you have or realise any problems with your eyesight that affect your eyes or the remaining eye, if you only have one look, you must inform your driving instructor immediately.

It doesn’t include being short or long-sighted or colour-blind. You need not say if you’ve had surgery to correct short-sightedness and can meet the eyesight vision standards for driving.

Any eyesight issues or concerns you may have or need to check if you need to tell DVLA about an eyesight problem can be by searching the A to Z of medical conditions that could affect your driving.

Reading the Highway Code before taking your driving lesson will help you understand the rules of the road.
